We hire writers for our sites for a variety of reasons. Most do so to grow traffic and revenue faster. This is the main reason I do it.
Some do it because writing is challenging for them and/or they don’t like it.
Both reasons are good reasons for hiring writers.
However, one reason too often ignored is the fact that by outsourcing we can hire writers better than ourselves.
Most of us start our sites writing everything ourselves. I wrote everything for years. I still write for my niche sites. I’m not the world’s best writer but I usually do a pretty good job for my sites; good enough so that it often performs well.
Me being me and wanting to grow, as soon as I could afford it, I hired writers so that I could publish more content faster. I was reluctant to do this at first because in my mind nobody could write articles for my sites as well as I could.
While it’s true that some content I’ve received over the years isn’t as good as what I could write, I also have to admit that I’ve received articles that far surpass anything I could have written. I’m not joking. In fact, the idea for this blog post came to me this afternoon because I just approved an absolutely awesome article delivered to me by a writer with WriterAccess. She was not on my love list but she is now. I praised her work and encouraged her to pick up more from in the future.
Dang, it was a fine piece of writing. It made my afternoon to receive such a great article on the topic.
Here’s a quick update – two days later I received an article from a writer that was done in such a great way I’ve tweaked the content brief and I use that article as the sample in the brief.
These are not the first times either.
Not only are there many freelance writers who can pen prose leaps and bounds better than me, I often appreciate the different approach they take compared to what I might have taken. I fall into content ruts. I tackle similar article concepts the same. When I see a unique approach, I take note and add to my own repertoire for future articles. Often, I’ll tweak my content briefs incorporating the improved approach.
My point is you likely are not the best writer in the world.
I know your site is your baby and if low on funds, by all means write it all yourself. Moreover, if you love writing and don’t wish to outsource it, more power to you. That’s a totally legit approach as well.
But if you’re holding back from outsourcing because you believe no freelance writer out there can match your skills, think again. I guarantee you there are better writers than you.
The trick is finding them. You might not find them with your first order, but if you are diligent with the outsourcing process, you will find them. I have and I’m about as impatient of a person when it comes to this business that you’ll find.
Your writing team could be your competitive advantage
I’m not joking. The longer I’m in this online publishing business, the more I realize just how important it is to spend time finding and hiring the right writers whether in-house or finding them on platforms such as WriterAccess or services such as Passion Posts (save 10% with coupon code BWMZ0ZXDWK). Having a cadre of crackerjack writers willing to write for you could be your greatest strength in this business. Do not skimp your time hiring and assessing writers. It’s time very well spent. It may not be the most exciting part of this business, but play your cards right and it could be the best thing you ever do.
